Sociograms: Mapping Community Health with the CAIR Project

Sociogramas en el barrio de Carrús - proyecto CAIR

The CAIR team is very excited to share a significant milestone in the project in the Carrús neighbourhood, in Elche. We’ve taken a big step forward by beginning to collect data through a participatory tool: sociograms.

What are sociograms and why are they crucial for improving Community Health?

Sociograms are much more than simple graphs; they are a visual map of the relationships, interactions, and connections within a community. Imagine being able to draw how the different actors in the community (associations, institutions, and neighbors) are connected, who the points of contact are, where information flows, and where natural support networks reside. This allows us to understand the social structure of Carrús in a deep and dynamic way.

In the context of the CAIR project, this participatory activity is fundamental for several reasons:

  • Identifying support networks: They help us discover and strengthen existing solidarity networks, which are essential pillars for health and well-being.
  • Detecting needs: By understanding relational dynamics, we can identify areas where connections are weaker or where information isn’t reaching effectively, allowing us to propose more precise interventions.
  • Promoting participation: By involving organisations, local authorities, and the residents themselves in creating these maps, we encourage project ownership and active collaboration.
  • Designing personalised strategies: With this data, we can propose health actions and programmes that are truly adapted to the specific characteristics and needs of the people in the neighbourhood. These aren’t generic solutions, but initiatives that resonate with the local reality.

CAIR and co-creation: our core

The CAIR project is based on the premise that health is a reflection of relationships and environment. That’s why creating joint solutions (as opposed to one-way ones) isn’t just another component, it’s the very heart of our methodology. Sociograms are a clear example of how we integrate the voices and experiences of Carrús residents to build a healthier future together.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone participating and contributing their valuable information. Every connection mapped, every interaction recorded, brings us one step closer to understanding and strengthening community health in the neighbourhood.

This is just the beginning of an exciting phase of analysis and co-creation. We’ll keep sharing our progress and the discoveries that emerge from these maps of life in Carrús.

What do you think about using sociograms in community projects? Do you believe they’re an effective tool for understanding neighbourhood dynamics? We’d love to read your comments.
